There are reports coming out of Ireland stating that light heavyweight amateur Kenneth “Kenny” Egan, who won a silver medal for Ireland in the 2008 Beijing games, is on the verge of signing a deal to turn professional under the banner of New York-based promoter Lou DiBella.
Egan has been one of the most sought after amateurs on the market, with offers flying his way from promoters in Ireland, the UK and America. He made it known a few weeks ago that he preferred to sign with an American promoter. His Olympic teammate Darren Sutherland recently signed a deal with UK promoter Frank Maloney.
Based in Dublin, Egan would like to come over to America to build his career in the pro ranks. Many, including the television commentators, felt he should have won his gold medal match against Xiaoping Zhang of China. Due to the flawed Olympic scoring system, several of his landed blows in the final round were not credited and ending up losing by way of an 11-7 score.
One boxing insider said - "The guy has the looks and charisma of a John Duddy, except this kid can really fight."
