If you are riding through Louisiana, click on your radio station and hear “Bayou Bomber Boogie” know that this song was inspired by the rising star that is Bobby Aucoin (14-0-1, 6ko‘s). With a loyal fan following that numbers in the thousands, Bobby is a third generation boxer with a quiet drive to be the best in the lightweight division by the end of 2006.

Aucoin is being considered for the new crop fighters on “The Contender” and will possibly be seen nationwide if the show chooses to feature lightweights this go round.

The “Bayou Bomber” moves into eight round competition for the first time this month at the  Paragon Casino and Resorts on November 26th in Louisiana, the card will include Chad Broussard. We will supply more details as match-ups solidify.

When not boxing, Bobby is an avid fisherman, and spends time at the Aucoin’s fishing camp which has taken a beating this year and was partially destroyed due to this terrible hurricane season. Though this was to be a boxing interview, I have to admit I got sidetracked when the discussion turned to redfish, trout, and bass fishing.

Now. before we discuss boxing, tell me about “Bayou Bomber Boogie”?

Aucoin: (laugh) It’s just a song that a Jerry Lee Lewis relative and impersonator made up, an it just caught on.  I use it for my entrance song to go to the ring.

I understand you have a fan following that numbers in the thousands?

Aucoin: Oh yes, I have a bunch of people that come to see my fights, it’s probably around a few thousand.
They show up anywhere I fight. It’s very flattering and really drives me to win for them, you know.

How many amateur bouts did you have, Bobby?

Aucoin: About ninety I think, in 1997 I was rated in the top eight in the U.S. at 147 and now I fight at 135

135 is a tough division, how do you see yourself in the picture for the titles?

Aucoin: There are a  whole bunch of guys that are tough but Diego Corrales is who I’d like to fight. I don’t think I would have a problem with his reach or anything because  I’m 5’ 11” and would match up well. If Castillo could hit him with hooks I think I could to. I like fighting tall people in my division but it doesn’t happen often (laugh).

So this month you return to the ring, have you gotten your opponent yet?

Aucoin: No, not yet.  This will be my first eight  round fight so we have been working a little harder. Not a whole lot harder because I stay in good shape. I lost out on a fight last week to a no-show, so I just kept training. I was training for 6 rounds, so we just stepped it up. I could probably go ten rounds because I train that hard.

At 14-0-1 when do you feel you will move into a the title picture?

Aucoin: Hopefully next year I’ll be in the mix. I’d like Corrales but then you have a few guys first like Edner Cherry and Ebo Elder too.  They are pretty good. Ebo is a machine, I used to see him at the amateurs and he keeps coming. Courtney Burton found that out. I just want to fight the best.

What do you do when you’re not training, Bobby?

Aucoin: All I really have time for is training but when I get some time I love to fish or hunt.
After the hurricane it is a little hard. I took some vacation time and went to Hot Springs and fished Lake Hamilton and a few other places. It was some good bass fishing. Redfish is one of me favorites in the gulf to fish for. That and speckled trout. We have a fishing camp down south but it got flooded in the hurricane. I enjoy some duck hunting as well.

Seems like you are ready for this new fight?

Aucoin: I’m ready to go right now, I believe it will be packed and people better get their tickets early (laugh). People are already buying tickets there may not be any in a week or two..

Compare your style to a champion for people to get an idea how you box?

Aucoin: I compare myself to Oscar De La Hoya, I move well, can switch up and don’t get hit much. It’s hard to say because I have trouble talking about myself and I don’t brag to much. I just like to get in there and do my thing. Hopefully next year will be a good year and people around the country can see me for themselves because its hard to explain myself.

You know who I would like to box to, is Kevin Kelly, I see he is back in the game. I fought a guy Tommy Parks who fought to a technical draw with Kelly and I KO’d Parks in 2. That may be a good fight for me.

Do you feel as you gain experience your power is improving?

Aucoin: Yes Sir, I’m learning how to set down on my punches a little better, get  in my rhythm , set up my punches, not moving around so much. Staying in the pocket, slipping and being able to counter. My jab is getting better to. I’m working  on my jab a lot. When I hit the bag a lot of times I will just throw the jab not use my right hand at all just jab, throw hooks and uppercuts with the left hand, mix it up, just building the strength more in my left. I do a little weight training, high reps, not strength training.

I notice that your father is your trainer, did he get you started in the sport?

Aucoin: Yes, I used to watch him train and hit the bag in our house.  I always watched the fights on  TV with him. I liked to fight so I started hitting and training with him when I was 14 and he began taking me to the gym. . My grandfather was a fighter to, my dad was an amateur and I think my grandfather was a pro. He don’t like to talk much about his career but I know my grandfather was a heck of a street fighter because people still talk about him.

Will you be at the fight on the 26th.

I can’t be there this time but will be watching for the outcome. Thanks for your time and good luck moving up in the lightweight rankings.

Aucoin: Keep in touch and next time you are down this way we can do some fishing. We’ll catch some of those big redfish.

Bobby, if you are frying, I’m flying. Thanks and good luck.
