Boxing Scene: Are you fighting Joe Calzaghe?
Jeff Lacy: We have a fight with my mandatory and after he fight then we supposed to fight sometime in September, November.
Boxing Scene: Who is your mandatory?
Jeff Lacy: I have a mandatory, Rubin Reid, he’s out of England, were supposed to square off on August 6th.
Boxing Scene: Are you comfortable at 168 or do you want to go to 160 or even up to 175?
Jeff Lacy: I’m comfortable at 168, like I said my dream is to unify the division the Super Middleweight division. Then perhaps in between that time you know what I mean I would love to fight the guys, the champions at the middleweight division, and then perhaps move up to Light-Heavyweight.
Boxing Scene: You stopped working with Roger Bloodworth right?
Jeff Lacy: It was perhaps maybe a year and a half ago I stopped working with him.
Boxing Scene: Who is training you right now?
Jeff Lacy: Dan Bermingham, Winky Wright’s trainer.
Boxing Scene: What did you think about the fights on the ESPN pay per view? What did you think about Margarito?
Jeff Lacy: I thought it was some great fights, I won some money, Calvin Brock he’s a guy that’s up and coming that a lot of people were sleeping on and I have a lot of confidence in him
Boxing Scene: What about Cintron-Margarito?
Jeff Lacy: You got two strong guys and it was the one with more experience that won the fight and Margarito was a little bit stronger than Kermit.
Notes:
Interestingly Jeff Lacy is scheduled to fight Robin Reid in St. Petersberg, Florida on August 6th. Coincidently Winky Wright is from St. Pertersberg. Could it be that Winky Wright and his brain trust have already tentatively scheduled a gimme homecoming fight to celebrate his victory over Trinidad? It sure looks like it.
I bumped into Jeff at the Caesars Palace Sports Book, surprisingly Jeff pronounced Reid’s first name incorrectly calling him “Rubin,” whom he is scheduled to fight in August. Hopefully he is not taking Reid lightly, because Robin is world class. He was the WBC Super Middleweight Champion in 1997 and lost that title in an upset to the awkward and long armed Sugar Boy Malinga in his 4th defense. Reid was a Bronze Medallist in the 1992 Olympics, has a 38-4-1 record, and lost a split decision to a prime Joe Calzaghe in 1999.
I have to give props to Jeff because he was hanging with probably the finest girl in all of Caesars Palace. I guess being a World Champion has its privileges.
