BoxingScene.com spoke to Gary Shaw, the promoter of Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo about recent rumblings that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. doesn't want to go to the Philippines to train for a potential bout with Miguel Cotto on December 4th. BoxingScene's Jhonny Gonzalez first reported on Chavez's reluctance to go to the Philippines last week.
Chavez shares the same trainer as Manny Pacquiao in Freddie Roach. The longtime Pacquiao trainer has a logistical dilemma with training his stable of fighters. Roach wants Chavez Jr. to be Pacquiao's primary sparring partner as he has the size to best mimic Antonio Margarito. Roach is also bringing along undefeated junior middleweight Vanes Martirosyan who most likely will be making his ring return in November or December and will also spar with the Filipino superstar. There are rumors that Amir Khan may also head to the Philippines at some point to get ready for his December 11th fight that most likely will be against Marcos Maidana.
If Chavez sticks to his position of not going to the Philippines it would most likely kill a December showdown with Cotto. When Promoter Gary Shaw caught wind of this he told Boxingscene, "Perro would gladly fight Cotto in December. If Top Rank decides to go out of house for an opponent I am sure we would have a box office smash."
Shaw believes the fight would do big business as it would still have the Puerto Rico-Mexico rivalry. "You still have Puerto Rico-Mexico angle. This fight would be big in California, Las Vegas or New York. I know Perro would love it and I think Cotto would welcome the challenge. This is the type of fight HBO would jump all over."
When Angulo was reached for comment he told BoxingScene, "I will fight whoever they put in front of me. Personally I think a fight with Cotto would be a great fight. It would be exciting for the fans."
Shaw also wanted to send his condolences to the Arum family, "I wish Bob and his family the best in this trying time. May John Arum rest in peace."
