On Saturday night in Obregan, former champion Humberto Soto (60-8-2, 34KOs) made his return and won a dominating decision over Silverio Ortiz (26-14). The WBC's vacant Internation junior welterweight title was aquired by Soto.
The Mexican veteran's team is going to push for the winner of the ordered fight between WBC/WBA champion Danny Garcia and mandatory challenger Lucas Matthysse. Garcia will first defend his title on April 27th against Zab Judah, but then he must face Matthysse.
Soto already fought Matthysse in June of last year and was stopped in five rounds at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The boxer says there personal issues that affected his training camp and he would like to get another shot at Matthysse.
Ranked at #6 by the WBC at 140-pounds, Soto's team expect the recent victory and the regional title win to elevate his standing to a top five position in the rankings.
