WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29KOs) has a lot of options on the table.
His promoter, Kalle Sauerland of Sauerland Event, advised BoxingScene.com that discussions are still ongoing for a potential fight with 50-year-old legend, Bernard 'The Alien' Hopkins (55-7-2, 32KOs).
Hopkins has been out of the ring since losing a twelve round decision to Sergey Kovalev last November.
A few months, Hopkins spoke to BoxingScene and expressed his desire in dropping down a few pounds to challengr Abraham for his world title.
Hopkins, a former unified champion at 160 and 175 - has never fought at the super middleweight limit of 168. Back in 2006, when he made a decision to move up in weight, he jumped from middleweight and skipped 168 to go directly to light heavyweight.
At the moment, the biggest issue in making the fight is the money.
In Germany, Abraham is a big draw and generates very high television ratings. He makes a lot of money in Germany and Sauerland admits that Abraham can make a large purse fighting just about anyone at home.
To get a Hopkins deal finalized for the United States, it would take a proper amount of financial compensation to make Abraham swim across the ocean.
In reality, the fight is much larger, and aims to be a much bigger financial success, if the contest is held in Germany. And, both fighters stand to make more money if the contest is held in Abraham's backyard.
It's a safe bet that German network SAT.1 (who have an exclusive TV deal with Sauerland), would open their wallet a lot wider for this fight than HBO, who work closely with Hopkins' promoter Golden Boy Promotions.
"We've talking. Arthur has a very lucrative television contract in Germany, so it's coming down to a little bit of what's available financially from America. The fight is very interesting. We've been speaking to Golden Boy about, but at the end of the day it has to financially make sense to both fighters to do it," Sauerland told BoxingScene.com.
"At the moment we have to see what's available in America to do the fight. It's a big fight in Germany. But Arthur is a big draw alone in Germany. To make that extra, and to pay Bernard what he's worth.....Bernard is a legend and a great fighter, so he's going to command a big purse, so we have to somehow see how we can financially make that work. But we're talking about it at the moment."
If the Hopkins negotiations fall through, Abraham's next opponent could very well be his mandatory, undefeated Gilberto Ramirez (32-0, 24KOs).
Sauerland has a meeting scheduled with Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who promotes Ramirez - to discuss the possible fight. The WBO is going to issue an order in the coming weeks and both sides anticipate the mandatory being due in early 2016.
"I'm meeting with Bob this week. I'm in Vegas and we'll sit down. The mandatory is due early next year. We'll know exactly when the mandatory is due at the [WBO] convention at the end of this month and I think that's a great fight as well," Sauerland said.
