Former four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield told ICWales that undisputed super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe must make it a fight when he meets light heavyweight Bernard Hopkins on April 19. He says the Calzaghe must entertain the American boxing pubic if he plans to become a "name" in the United States.
“I’ve been privileged to be able to fight in Las Vegas many times and there’s just one word to describe the place – fantasy. It’s everything and then that little bit more," Holyfield said. "Fighting in one of the big venues with the crowds is something boxers dream of and the atmosphere is unique. But if Calzaghe wants to be someone in America, he’s got to understand the public go to Vegas be entertained, they pay their money and they want something for it.
“So if he’s going there to be recognised in America and wants to be liked as well as be the champ, then he’s got to be aggressive. People don’t pay to watch guys who aren’t aggressive and coming forward. Lennox Lewis was a champion, but it took a long time for people to like him in America – they want to see excitement and be excited.
“Besides, when you throw a lot of punches, it puts the other guy on the defensive and that improves your chance of winning. Nobody wins a fight on defense.”
