The meticulous development of heavyweight prospect Damian “Bolo” Wills continued last night at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, California.
Wills 19-0-1 (15 KO’s) captured a unanimous decision victory by methodically dismantling his springboard opponent Sedreck Fields in the 8-round main event. All three judges scored the fight identical 80-72. Fighting at a controlled pace from start to finish, Wills thoroughly subjugated Fields 21-27-2 (15 KO’s) to a steady stream of jabs in the opening round.
Wild ringside banter proved to be more entertaining than Fields’ in-ring execution. Fields flaunted his chin and insulted his opponent’s power by incessantly allowing Wills to land unprotected power shots. In the third round, the 265-pound journeyman from Atlanta, Georgia failed to increase his punch output by stepping up his slapstick antics. Wills remained in control through the fifth round by landing one punch at a time. Capitalizing on Fields’ poor agility, Wills was able to land effective punches at different angles. A noticeably exhausted Fields couldn’t overcome his poor conditioning to fend off Wills’ constant onslaught.
The co-featured bout produced more wrestling than boxing action with Deon Elam 6-0 (2 KO’s) picking up a nondescript unanimous decision win over Milton Hulbert (1-1). The four-round Cruiserweight contest lacked substance with Elam failing to exploit Hulbert’s passive aggressiveness. Elam wrapped up the fight by landing the most significant and effective punches at the close of the fourth round. The official scorecards read 40-36 (twice), 39-37.
In a fight absent of jabs Marcus Dear 2-1 (1 KO) knocked out Chris Green 3-1 (3 KO‘s) in the third-round of a heavyweight slugfest. Although his hand speed could be timed with a sun dial, an assertive Dear shook off Green’s booming left hooks to score the knockout victory.
Fans witnessed yet another knockout victory in a four-round Junior Middleweight fight featuring Vardan Gasparyan 5-1-1 (2 KO’s) and Norm Wardsworth (0-1). From the outset Gasparyan stalked his opponent and landed outstanding combinations knocking down Wardsworth in the first-round. Wardsworth display of nifty footwork and an inaccurate long range straight right to counter Gasparyan’s stalking style proved to be fruitless. Referee Jerry Cantu stopped the fight when a visibly tired Wardsworth absorbed an assorted array of power punches. Wardsworth succumbed to Gasparyan’s counter-punching and solid ring presence at the official time of 1:48 of the second-round.
Jr. Middleweight George Moreno made quick work of his opponent Peter Nyland with a first-round knockout victory. Moreno 3-11 (1 KO) overpowered Nyland 3-2-1 (3 KO’s) against the ropes with thunderous shots to the body, highlighted by a right uppercut-left hook combo.
Enthralled in a four-round Junior Welterweight bout Jean Elissa 4-3-2 (3 KO’s) was a majority decision winner over Angel Flores (3-1). Elissa’s repeated barrage of left hooks caused a cut over Flores’ right eye. Fading with each passing round, Flores’ failure to protect himself against Elissa’s left handed attack proved to be his downfall. The official’s scores were 40-36, 39-37 and 38-38.
