Over the last three weeks, boxing has seen some major tide shifts along with concrete validations. At Flyweight, Koki Kameda wrested the lineal Flyweight crown into his grasp with Earth-shattering television numbers in Japan while Vitali Klitschko, Timothy Bradley, and Lucian Bute all kept their belts in various divisions with commanding outings.
The highlight of the month, a Middleweight war between Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez, furthered the esteem of both while a single terrible scorecard gave boxing cynics new fuel for their own fires. What is the fallout of recent weeks in terms of how these men, and their compatriots, stack up?
This is the BoxingScene Divisional Ratings and Results Update.

Notable Recent Results
11/07: #6 David Haye (23-1, 21 KO) UD12 #5 Nicolay Valuev (50-2, 34 KO, WBA)
12/05: #2 Alexander Povetkin (18-0, 13 KO) KO3 Leo Nolan (27-2, 10 KO)
12/05: #7 Chris Arreola (28-1, 25 KO) TKO4 Brian Minto (34-3, 21 KO)
12/12: #1 Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KO, WBC) UD12 #10 Kevin Johnson (22-1-1, 9 KO)
World Champion: Wladimir Klitschko (53-3, 47 KO, Lineal/Ring/IBF/WBO)
Lineage Descends From: W. Klitschko RTD9 Chagaev 06/20/2009
Top Ten Contenders
1. Vitali Klitschko (38-2, 37 KO, WBC, 3 Defenses)
2. Alexander Povetkin (18-0, 13 KO)
3. Eddie Chambers (35-1, 18 KO)
4. Ruslan Chagaev (25-1-1, 17 KO)
5. David Haye (23-1, 21 KO, WBA, 0 Defenses)
6. Nicolay Valuev (50-2, 34 KO)
7. Cristobal Arreola (28-1, 25 KO)
8. Samuel Peter (32-3, 25 KO)
9. Alexander Dimitrenko (29-1, 19 KO)
10. John Ruiz (44-8-1, 30 KO)
Rating Notes…Vitali was workmanlike and efficient in winning every round against Kevin Johnson. A rarity in this era, Vitali is a hard Heavyweight to criticize. He’s always in shape, fights hard, and wins. At 38, it would be sad if Vitali can’t find an opponent to truly define him…A battle with David Haye would be easy to anticipate but Haye must first contend with a WBA mandatory against the man who replaces Johnson in the rating, former titlist John Ruiz. Ruiz’s only official losses since 2003 have come versus Valuev and Chagaev…Chambers looks set to cash in his WBO mandatory against Wladimir before IBF mandatory Povetkin gets his shot. Chambers might be a live underdog; Povetkin, a 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist, certainly would be…arguably the worst decade in Heavyweight history has closed and let’s hope it can’t get any worse in the ‘teens.

World Cruiserweight Champion: Tomasz Adamek (39-1, 27 KO, Lineal/Ring)

Top Ten Contenders
1. Steve Cunningham (22-2, 11 KO)
2. Marco Huck (27-1, 20 KO, WBO, 1 Defense)
3. Zsolt Erdei (31-0, 17 KO, WBC, 0 Defenses)
4. Ola Afolabi (14-2-3, 6 KO)
5. Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (42-2-1, 31 KO)
6. Victor Ramirez (15-2, 12 KO)
7. Grigory Drozd (32-1, 23 KO)
8. Giacobbe Fragomeni (26-2-1, 10 KO)
9. Danny Green (28-3, 25 KO)
10. Troy Ross (23-1, 16 KO)
Rating Notes…Cruiserweight, after a lengthy period of relative strength, is either fading or reloading. Time will tell, but the likelihood that Adamek isn’t returning from Heavyweight doesn’t bode well…Huck improved his stock with a nice, close win over Afolabi… Afolabi might have dropped more in defeat but the removal from the ratings of longtime stalwarts Firat Arslan and WBA titlist Guillermo Jones, both of whom have been inactive for over a year, allows him to keep some ground…Into the ratings due to their exits come Danny Green, a former WBA Light Heavyweight titlist now competing at Cruiser, and Contender Season Four winner Troy Ross…Green made a big splash on December 5th with a first round stoppage of Roy Jones…While the division might not ever get Adamek-Steve Cunningham II, a fight it needed, it might get Cunningham-Huck II sometime down the road. Their first fight was quality stuff and it remains Huck’s only defeat.

9. Gabriel Campillo (19-2, 6 KO, WBA, 1 Defense)
10. Juergen Braehmer (34-2, 28 KO, WBO, 0 Defenses)
Rating Notes…Light Heavyweight is a tale of two demographics. At the top of the class are three of the best young titlists in the game. Below them are three big name veterans who have seen better days…The best of the old men, Hopkins, appears to have almost no interest in the young guns or even Light Heavyweights. Since rising to defeat Tarver in 2006, the former Middleweight king has not faced another man rated in the division prior to fighting him…Diaconu loses nothing off his second spirited loss to Pascal; together, the two gave the division its best fights of the year…Pascal, fighting through a separated shoulder, furthered his growing reputation as a gutsy thriller. His mandatory is Dawson and the two should be a must for confrontation in 2010…Tavoris Cloud has the style of a star but needs activity and exposure for his sake and the division’s…Roy Jones exits the ratings after over a decade as a central part of the 175 lb. mix.

Top Ten Contenders
1. Lucian Bute (25-0, 20 KO, IBF, 4 Defenses)
2. Andre Ward (21-0, 13 KO, WBA, 0 Defenses
3. Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KO)
4. Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KO, WBC, 1 Defense)
5. Mikkel Kessler (42-2, 32 KO)
6. Sakio Bika (28-3-2, 19 KO)
7. Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KO)
8. Librado Andrade (28-3, 21 KO)
9. Robert Steiglitz (36-2, 22 KO, WBO, 0 Defenses)
10. Eduard Gutknect (18-0, 7 KO)
Ratings Notes…Round two of the Super Six is set now that Jermain Taylor has elected to continue in the tournament. He’s been stopped brutally in consecutive fights to Froch (before the tournament) and Abraham (in round one). Ward doesn’t offer the same power dilemma of those two but will be heavily favored anyways…Abraham-Dirrell presents an interesting test for Abraham. He’s beaten a lot of styles to date, but never one has elusive and tricky as Dirrell’s…Froch-Kessler should be a war. Kessler will be in front of Froch and Froch will be wide open for Kessler’s right, providing each man a little to fear and a little to like going in…For now, based on his blazing knockout of Andrade, Bute maintains the number one spot in the class but does he have the opponents to stay there?...Andrade and Dirrell switch places after Andrade’s decisive loss.

World Middleweight Champion: Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 30 KO, Lineal/Ring/WBC/WBO)

Top Ten Contenders
1. Felix Sturm (33-2-1, 13 KO, WBA, 7 Defenses)

4. Khoren Gevor (30-4, 16 KO)
5. Anthony Mundine (37-3, 23 KO)
6. Daniel Geale (22-1, 13 KO)
7. Sebastian Zbik (27-0, 10 KO, WBC interim)
8. Marco Antonio Rubio (44-5-1, 38 KO)
9. David Lopez (38-12, 23 KO)
10. Giovanni Lorenzo (27-2, 19 KO)
Rating Notes…It’s not a division which gets the heart pumping, but it is still capable of producing fights which do. Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez was a scorcher which demands a rematch after only two acceptable scores were turned in…Kelly Pavlik returns with what should be an easy defense. A challenge from Williams (or Martinez?) awaits, meaning 2010 could be a renaissance year at 160…Felix Strum is caught up in some management issues. If those are resolved, he could mix in well with those three as could the man who should have received the decision and Sturm’s WBA belt last July, Khoren Gevor.

8. DeAndre Latimore (20-2, 16 KO)
9. Daniel Santos (32-4-1, 23 KO)
10. Vanes Martirosyan (25-0, 16 KO)
Ratings Notes…Sergio Martinez didn’t officially win a fight in 2009. However, his draw with Cintron was anything but and his loss to Paul Williams was heavy with controversy. He might be better off moving to Middleweight altogether…Dzinziruk continues to make noise about wanting real fights. He deserves to get one before he’s done…This is a division with little star power and few fights anyone really wants to see. James Kirkland’s return from jail time could be a big spark and a clash someday with Angulo is the best hope for a thriller…Williams exits the ratings, not having fought anywhere but Middleweight in over a year…Martirosyan enters the ratings at ten and could also provide some spark in the near future.

7. Amir Khan (212-1, 16 KO, WBA, 1 Defense)
8. Andriy Kotelnik (31-3-1, 13 KO)
9. Marcos Maidana (27-1, 26 KO)
10. Paulie Malignaggi (27-3, 5 KO)
Ratings Notes…In a more active boxing world, Bradley would be poised for a crack at the lineal champion of the division, Manny Pacquiao. He’s earned it but won’t be getting it unless Pacquiao is forced back into the Jr. Welterweight division…That’s actually not as big a stretch as it seems given Pacquiao’s looming showdown with Mayweather…If it happens, Pacquiao versus anyone other than Bradley at 140 is a joke…Amir Khan added a second impressive win in a row, mowing through the undefeated Salita. More dangerous options should exist in 2010 as will a chance to move up…For all the talk of Welterweight being the best class in boxing, it has nowhere near the depth of its smaller sister class right now. This is the land of tomorrow’s pound for pound kings.

8. Anthony Peterson (29-0, 19 KO)
9. Miguel Acosta (26-3-2, 20 KO, WBA interim)
10. Antonio DeMarco (23-1-1, 17 KO, WBC interim)
Rating Notes…Ali Funeka was robbed as blindly as any fighter this decade again Joan Guzman and the two trade places after what was a one sided beating. Scoring like that brings shame on the sport…Valero appears poised for a battle with DeMarco next year and it could be a fantastic fight…Juan Diaz remains at number one despite a loss (his second?) to Paulie Malignaggi if only because no one else at Lightweight has really demanded the spot from him yet. Only in his mid-20s, could Diaz already be past his prime? He looked slower and more tentative in the Malignaggi rematch than he ever has…Anthony Peterson should have a belt by the end of 2010.

*Gans defenses were spread over two reigns but he never lost the title in the ring, electing to vacate the title in a short trip to Welterweight before returning to reclaim the crown. Roberto Duran can also be credited with the record at 12 in a single title reign.

8. Takefumi Sakata (35-5-2, 16 KO)
9. Drian Francisco (18-0-1, 14 KO)
10. Daigo Nakahiro (21-2, 8 KO)
Ratings Notes…Vic Darchinyan looked no worse for wear in his first fight since a loss at Bantamweight to Joseph Agbeko, knocking out Tomas Rojas with fury. Could Darchinyan-Donaire II be around the corner? Promoter Gary Shaw sounded like he was on board…Alexander Munoz exits the ratings not having fought at 115 in over a year…Drian Francisco joins based on the strength of his win in October over Roberto Vasquez…All signs point to a Nashiro-Cazares rematch next year. Their first fight, a draw, was one of the year’s’ unsung gems…Z Gorres, despite enduring what will probably be career ending head injuries, will remain rated through the end of the year. Considering what he always gave in the ring, and what he almost gave his last time out, it’s the least which can be done.

* Canto, a WBC champion, was regarded by some, including Ring Magazine, as lineal champ as early as 1975 for defeating Shoji Oguma; became clear champion when twice defended against foe Betulio Gonzalez became WBA champ on 08/13/1978
Ratings Notes…In a fight which met the hype that produced a massive television audience of more than half of Japan, Koki Kameda reached the pinnacle long expected for him by claiming the Flyweight throne. There will be no rest for the young champion whose mandatory come right away in the form of Thai great Pongsaklek Wonjongkam…Kaovitchit appears headed towards an unnecessary rematch with Kameda’s younger brother Daiki. The first fight was less than thrilling…If Kaovitchit wins again, could a unification fight with Koki be in the offing? The division hasn’t seen one of those in generations…Omar Narvaez is one fight away from tying Wonjongkam’s general title defense record but has no opponent lined up so far.
