On the undercard to Ricky Hatton-Paulie Malignaggi at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Heriberto Ruiz (40-7-2, 23 KOs) dominated Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista (26-2, 19 KOs), the current number-one rated junior featherweight by the WBO. Ruiz won an easy unanimous eight round decision. The scores were 80-70, 78-72 and 77-73.

Bautista had no answers for the cleaner punches and better combinations of Ruiz, who dominated by taking the fight to the once highly regarded Filipino prospect. Ruiz decked Bautista in the third round. The Filipino fighter suffered a serious cut from a clash of heads during the same round.

The fight was an interim bout before Bautista would be lined up for a title shot in 2009.
