Around 12.15pm (UK time) today, English Eubank (formerly known as Chris Eubank) put out the following tweet:
“Team Eubank are released from the Matchroom contract because Eddie [Hearn] lost the purse bid 4 the British title fight against [Nick] Blackwell 2 Hennessy [Sports].”
As English alluded to, Hennessy Sports did indeed beat Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing with a winning purse bid to stage the contest between their British middleweight champion Nick Blackwell and Chris Eubank Jr. The latter fought recently on Sky Box Office (Pay-Per-View) defeating Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan in a WBA World middleweight title final eliminator with the Irishman’s corner pulling him out of the fight after seven rounds.
Boxing’s Twitter fraternity was taking aback by English’s tweet so Boxing Scene reached out to Eddie Hearn to get his response.
“We had a three-fight deal. But we lost the purse bids and it’s up to them whether they want a third fight with us or not. I don’t know what they’re going to do. They can either take the Blackwell fight or have another fight with us.
“It was a three-fight deal and if we were to lose the purse bids then the contract’s terminated. We’ve had two fights, this was the third fight we lost the purse bids so if they want they don’t have to have a third fight with us.
"Of course there will be other negotiations if either of us want to continue the agreement or not but for the third fight they’re welcome to take the Blackwell fight or remain with us on Sky.”
