Word comes late that journeyman heavyweight Brian "Bam Bam," Scott, just age 41, died on Aug. 20 in the Kansas City area.
Scott's aunt Gail Golden informed some of the 6-foot, 5-inch boxer's former associates of his death. She said that, although Scott battled drugs and alcohol much of his life, he was "clean and sober" the past 16 months.
Scott got the typical new heavyweight buildup and was 15-0 when he got knocked out by Irish Tommy Morrison in two rounds.
Scott finished with a 25-7, 16 knockouts record which included a veritable Who's Who of the heavyweight division including world champions Shannon Briggs, James "Buster" Douglas and Ray Mercer.
Scott scored one amazing upset in Atlantic City in 1996 when he stunned 19-0 South African prospect Courage Tshabalala. The heavily favored Tshabalala was knocked out in the second round.
Condolences to the family and friends of "Bam Bam."
