New York - Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs) has been longing for a big fight. However to get that big fight he had to jump up two weight classes to fight the best middleweight in the world in Gennady Golovkin. Brook had longed for a fight with his UK rival, Amir Khan (31-4, 19KOs).
According to his promoter, Eddie Hearn, the fight was close to happening. But much like Brook did to land a big fight, Khan jumped up two weight classes to fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez at a catch weight of 155.
“When Canelo boxed Amir Khan, we were very close to getting that Amir Khan fight,” Heard told BoxingScene.com. “Kell phoned me and said get me Golovkin, I will fight Golovkin. I mentioned him to Tom Loefler (Golovkin’s promoter) but we were looking at other things.”
Those other things were a showdown between Golovkin and another Hearn fighter, Chris Eubank, Jr. Those talks fell through and Brook stepped in to take on the task.
“I phoned Kell up on Wednesday night last week, told him this Eubank fight is dead, it’s a shame you won’t fight Golovkin and he told me, ‘I told you I’d fight Golovkin. I’m 100 percent serious.’ I phoned Tom Loefler and boom fight is made. When people want the fight they get made, when they don’t want the fights they don’t. These two want to make fights.”
Should Brook upset Golovkin, he star power would sky rocket. Even if he does beat Golovkin, Hearn does not feel bitter about Amir Khan not wanting to fight Brook in the past and would definitely still want to make the fight happen.
“It’s the biggest fight in Britain. It’s not a case I don’t like him or he said I don’t like him. I want to make big fights and give the fans good fights and get fighters paid. Maybe all these older promoter guys are bitter and boxing makes you bitter. Maybe I haven’t been in the game long enough to be bitter. It’s a sh*t business, after a while you lose heart with it. Give me a couple of years and I may be that guy but no we’d love to make the Khan fight.”
