T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, NV - Matchroom Sport's Eddie Hearn is in agreement with the scores of last night's unanimous decision victory by Andre Ward (31-0, 15KOs) over Sergey Kovalev (30-1, 26KOs) . He had Ward winning but understood why many people had Kovalev coming out on top.
All three of the official judges had Ward winning 114-113. He became a two-division world champion with the win and walked away with Kovalev's WBO, WBA, IBF light heavyweight world titles.
"I had Ward winning, [WBC super middleweight champion] Badou Jack who was sitting next to me I think had Kovalev by 3-4 points, some others had Kovalev or Ward so scores were all over," said Hearn.
Main Events CEO Kathy Duva announced at the post fight press conference that they will exercise their immediate rematch clause. Hearn feels that regardless of a rematch clause, an immediate rematch is the most lucrative bout for both fighters.
"They are both terrific fighters and it was a good tactical fight but they aren't real big sellers. I don't know if there is a rematch clause or not but I think the biggest fight, where they can both make the most money, is a rematch and then maybe they can fight Stevenson," Hearn opined.
