New York - Mega fights in boxing never come easy as recent history has shown. Whether it was Mayweather-Pacquiao or the recent dealings with Canelo-Golovkin, there are always obstacles to overcome.
Enter the heavyweight division. Anthony Joshua (21-0, 20 KO’s) and Deontay Wilder have gone back and forth on every platform outside the ring. However, getting them into the ring to fight each other to determine the undisputed heavyweight champion is another story.
The two have gone their separate ways for now. Joshua will be defending his WBO, IBO, WBA, and IBF titles against Alexander Povetkin (24-1, 24 KO’s). Wilder (40-0, 39 KO’s) seems to be on a collision course to defend his WBC title against the lineal champion Tyson Fury (24-0, 19 KO’s).
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, feels that the fight between the two is only going to get bigger because of the opposition they are presumably fighting in their next bouts. Though Hearn doesn’t feel confident that Fury and Wilder ever get in the ring.
“If I could choose one person for Deontay Wilder to fight that would make the Joshua fight even bigger, it would be Tyson Fury,” Hearn told BoxingScene.com.
“I just don’t know whether the fight, if it happens in November or if it happens at all. If Wilder wins that fight which I think he does, then it makes the Joshua fight 3 of 4 times bigger and it makes his side even bigger.”
Hearn feels that his side is ready to make the fight and certain things from the Wilder camp make him feel that it was Wilder’s side that may have not wanted the fight at all.
“You saw Frank Warren come out and say he was behind the $50 million offer and helping Shelly Finkel getting the funds together, that really scared me and makes me think they didn’t want the fight at all,” said Hearn.
“Why would you go to Frank Warren for money and why would you go to a rival network that Joshua can’t fight on because he has an exclusive deal with Sky. It’s all confusing. Maybe it was always going to be Wilder V Fury.”
According to Hearn, the fight will only grow and his side is ready to make the deal happen.
“I believe the money that was there for this fight is going to be 4 or 5 times more because the fight is going to get bigger and bigger and bigger, I can’t speak on behalf of Deontay Wilder but we want the fight. Let’s see if the Fury fights happens and when I mean happens - let’s see if they make it in the ring,” Hearn said.
