Amir Khan should stop dreaming of a fight with Floyd Mayweather and fight a more realistic opponent in Kell Brook – That’s the view of Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn, who wants to see a welterweight showdown between the two in 2012.
Hearn, who is currently overseeing 25 year-old Brook’s American debut in Atlantic City next month, is angling to pit his 147lb star against the current light-welterweight champion when he moves up next year and wants the fight to be held in the UK.
“If Khan wants a big fight and a big fight in Britain, then who better than against the new superstar in that division, Kell Brook?” Hearn told The Mirror.
“Anyway, I don’t think Amir Khan is anywhere near a fight with Mayweather and I’m not sure Mayweather would really look at that fight.”
‘Special K’ has a perfect 25-fight record and according to Hearn, is close to sealing a world title fight. Hearn then hopes to have more pulling power to entice Khan, 24, although the Bolton fighter has stated that he won’t deal with Hearn after a sour end to the Paul McCloskey fight in April.
“I’d like to see the fight,” he said. “I think the British public would like to see the fight and I know Sky Sports would like to see the fight.
“We’re in discussions with three separate people about world title fights, one we’re very close to securing for the spring.
“Let’s go out there and win a world title belt and then we’ll talk to Amir Khan as a world champion. Then we’ll see how the negotiations go from there.
“As much as he might dislike me, Amir Khan, if there’s a lot of money involved, trust me, his team will be there in a flash.
“We could do it at Wembley, the MEN, Old Trafford or Bolton, Sheffield. We don’t care. It would be a massive pay-per-view fight and everyone would make millions. Who’s not going to want to do that?”
