New York - It’s been years in the making but the all-British grudge match has yet to come to fruition between Amir Khan and Kell Brook (37-2, 26 KO’s).
The two rivals have won world titles and fought on pay-per-views with much financial success throughout their boxing careers. However, the biggest possible and feasible fight out there for both might be each other.
Khan (33-4, 20 KO’s) has recently aligned himself with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Sports, who is Brook’s promoter for several years.
So the fight might closer to be a reality than ever before. But, Brook has to defeat his return opponent on December 8th. His promoter, Eddie Hearn says an opponent should be announced soon.
“We are tying up the opponent now. He’s going to be a top 15 guy in the world rankings,” Hearn told BoxingScene.com “We all know we want the Khan fight. I do believe that’s going to happen in March. But Kell has only boxed once since March
Brook’s return bout will be at 154 lbs. The Khan fight will happen at 147. Hearn says in order for Kell to make 147, he needs to stay in the gym after his return fight.
“To make 147, you have to keep Kell Brook in the gym, stated Hearn. “So the plan is to have this fight at December 8th and keep Kell Brook in the gym until March. This fight will be at 154 but I expect Kell to come in at 151 and 152. He’s biggest problem he’d have one fight and then he’s 182. The plan is to have this fight and have a few days off and back in the gym.’
Khan has reportedly wanted a 10 lb. rehydration clause on the day of the fight for Brook, meaning that the Sheffield star cannot weigh in on the morning of the fight any heavier than 157 lbs. Hearn feels it may be a deal breaker for the fight.
“The rehydration cause may be a deal breaker. Kell has said he wants the fight at 147. He’s going to run out in December against a decent opponent. Then we can make the Khan fight for March. Let Kell do his work get the victory and we’ll finally get the big fight the British fans have been waiting for," Hearn said.
