A fight between Luke Campbell (18-2, 15 KOs) and former WBA lightweight champion Anthony Crolla (33-6-3, 13 KOs) makes sense for both men, says their promoter Eddie Hearn.
Campbell has been mandated to fight Yvan Mendy in a WBC lightweight final eliminator with purse bids due this Friday (June 1).
Mendy defeated Campbell in 2015 and the former world title challenger is keen to right the wrong of that loss.
"I just met with Campbell the other day and we started talking about the Crolla fight which would be a final eliminator for the WBA title. It's a great fight and it's one that makes sense for both guys," Hearn told Boxing Scene.
"It's one of the biggest fights to be made in Britain between British boxers. I like Crolla-Campbell. I think, as well, Crolla would love to fight for another world title. The only loose wheel is (WBO champion) [Ray] Beltran. [Mikey] Garcia's fighting [Robert] Easter (in a lightweight unification). A big money fight against Campbell might be the way that Crolla chooses to go. We need to get moving this week on that."
Beltran had been heavily linked to a unification fight in August with WBA champion Vasyl Lomachenko. That is now on the back-burner after news broke yesterday (May 29) that the Ukrainian will be out of action until the end of the year with a shoulder injury. The three-weight world champion who beat Jorge Linares - a former opponent of Campell and Crolla - to win the WBA title on May 12 reassured fans that he will return sooner than later by saying: "I'll be back in the ring this year."
