Heavyweight contender David Haye has gone back on the attack, blasting away with plenty of verbal damage on WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev. Haye is not worried about Valuev's 7'2 frame, or his 320-pound body. He is worried about Valuev's forrest of body hair. Haye wishes that he could bring a lawnmower to shave Valuev's hair before they fight this Saturday in Germany.
"I would love to bring a lawnmower into the ring with me before I fight this guy," Haye said to The Guardian. "Everyone goes on about his size but have you seen how hairy this guy is? That's what I'm looking forward to the least, because he's got matted hair all over his body. It's not a pretty sight, especially when he gets sweaty. I would suggest a wax job but that would take too long. A lawnmower is the only practical solution. You know what I mean?"
Haye is not surprised with the popularity of the fight. He tells the paper that promoting the event was easy because they are complete opposites.
"Promoting this fight is so easy it's a no-brainer," Haye said. "There's this giant, silent, murderous-looking Russian in one corner and, opposite him, we've got a good-looking, loud Brit who won't stop talking. It's David and Goliath all over again – and this time everyone in Germany and Russia seems convinced Goliath is going to smash little David."
Haye first saw Valuev 13-years-ago and never dreamed that he would one day fight this giant of a man. He saw Valuev fight at the age of 16 back in 1996 when UK promoter Frank Maloney was working with the Russian fighter.
"I first met Valuev when I was 16, at Battersea town hall. Frank Maloney was promoting him and I'd heard a lot about him so I went to see him in the flesh. When he got out of the ring I went up to him and I was shocked. He was very big, very hairy and very scary. They billed him as 'The Beast From The East'. I never thought in a million years I'd fight the guy. But 13 years down the line, he's heavyweight champion of the world," Haye said.
