Former two division world champion David Haye (28-2, 26KOs) has vowed to do damage on March 4th, when he faces domestic rival Tony Bellew (28-2-1, 18KOs) at the O2 Arena in London.
For months the two boxers exchanged words in published interviews. A few days ago they held a press conference to officially announce their Sky pay-per-view fight. Bellew, who holds the WBC cruiserweight title, is heading up to heavyweight for the fight.
Tempers flared up and the two fighters scuffled during the their head to head pose for the cameras.
During the press conference, words were flying between both sides and they were quite vicious at times.
Bellew's trainer, Dave Coldwell, was at one time a part of Haye's promotional company, Hayemaker Promotions. He believes the contest is a 50-50 fight. Haye believes the fight will be a complete mismatch.
"Coldwell has got no clue what he is talking about. He has never had a clue what he is talking about. He better have that towel close to hand… he’s gonna need it. If he doesn’t throw it in and I’m allowed to let a barrage of shots go… it will be sleepy time. It will be goodnight," Haye told GQ.
Bellew was mediocre at the light heavyweight limit, but found a lot of success after moving up by 25-pounds to cruiserweight. Most experts believe the fighter is biting off a little more than he can chew by facing Haye at heavyweight.
Haye sees an entire book of flaws when it comes to Bellew. He views Bellew as a slow fighter with a lackluster defense.
"He doesn’t move his head enough. He doesn’t adapt very well to speed. Fortunately, for me, my main asset is speed. Plain and simple. I’m fast for a heavyweight. I’m fast for a cruiserweight. I’m fast for a middleweight – I have middleweight speed. He won’t be able to see the punches coming, whereas I’ll be able to see everything. It will be like The Matrix… I will see everything in slow motion," Haye said.
"You can expect fireworks from the first bell. You can expect a very exciting fight and a sell-out crowd where people are going to go bananas. The fight will end exactly when I choose for it to end. Whatever round I choose to knock Bellew out, that will be when it ends."
