After a 13 month absence from the ring, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero will make his return this Saturday night as he takes on Yoshihiro Kamegai at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, CA.
Guerrero’s last fight was on May of 2013 when he suffered a loss to Floyd Mayweather as he now hopes to bounce back and get right back in the mix of things.
Guerrero is fortunate enough to be in the Welterweight division which is one of boxing’s deeper weight classes at the moment. Assuming Guerrero takes care of business against Kamegai, he’s looking to fight the best and biggest names available which include a rematch and an opponent moving up.
“I’m looking to get this fight out of the way and get right back in. I’m in great shape, feel good, I’ve been out for a year. It’s time to get back into that motion and campaign for that big fight with Floyd Mayweather. There are a lot of fights out there. I think Danny Garcia is coming up to 147 now. That’s another big fight there,” said Guerrero.
One fight that Guerrero was offered and turned down was against current interim WBA Welterweight champion Keith Thurman. Thurman has been on an impressive run and looking to land a meaningful fight against another top level opponent.
Guerrero was asked for his thoughts on a possible showdown with the undefeated knockout artist.
“Yeah, every fight is possible to happen. Keith Thurman he’s a good fighter. Hard hitter and he’s always in great shape and he’s been wrecking through the division. In the future that’s a big fight. Down the line but right now the focus is on Kamegai and have to get that done and everything else comes after that,” the Gilroy native would tell BoxingScene.
Guerrero is anxious to get back in the squared circle but assures he’s not looking past Kamegai. He saw what happened a couple weeks back with Sergio Martinez and Miguel Cotto and understand if he isn’t focused, an upset could happen.
