Former champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (29-1-1, 18KOs) sat down with BoxingScene.com to discuss his upcoming fight against Selcuk Aydin (23-0, 17KOs), for the WBC interim-welterweight title, taking place on July 28th at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. Showtime will televise.
BoxingScene.com: How's training camp going champ?
It’s going great. It’s our first week of camp in the mountains of Lake Tahoe and I'm really excited about being back in the gym. Aydin is a very good fighter and I’m going to be in the best physical condition possible. I'm here with my team, my father (Ruben), Bob Santos (manager), and my little brother Randy. It’s also going to be a big day for the Guerrero family because my brother hopes to be making his pro debut on July 28.
BoxingScene.com: What are your thoughts on the Pacquiao vs Bradley decision?
I clearly think Pacquio won the fight. That being said, anytime there's a human element involved, there’s going to be differences of opinions, or mistakes that can be made. The same can be said for any sport or aspect in life. To reiterate it again, the human element is involved, and you never know what goes on in one man’s mind. But I respect the decision of those highly regarded judges and they have their reasons of why they scored the fight that way. But there's no doubt in my mind that I feel Pac-man won the fight.
BoxingScene.com: What are your thoughts on your next opponent Selcuk Aydin?
They call him Mini Tyson for a reason. He’s a very good fighter. He's got tremendous power, he's a fully fledged welterweight, and he’s undefeated. He’s been the mandatory for this title for two years, so I know he's hungry. That’s why I’m making the sacrifice to be up here training in high elevation. I will be in great shape and my body will be very strong jumping up from 135 lbs. to 147 lbs. This will be the best Robert Guerrero you've seen.
BoxingScene.com: If you are successful in winning the interim-title, what is your dream fight?
To be honest with you, my dream is to fight Juan Manuel Marquez in Mexico City at the New Azteca stadium. Everyone wants to see that fight. Marquez is one of the best Mexican fighters of all time so it would be special for me. I'd be willing to give him a chance to make history as the only Mexican fighter to win 5 titles in as many weight classes in his backyard. He's a great fighter and to be the best you have to beat best.
BoxingScene.com: You would be willing to go fight Marquez in Mexico City?
Yes. I have no problem going to Mexico City to fight him. My grandparents are from Mexico City and it would be an honor to fight there. I’ve traveled overseas and won a title in Denmark when no one gave me a chance. Everyone thought it was career suicide, but I proved everyone wrong when I stopped him.
It was done before and it can be done again. We can have neutral judges. It can be in China, Texas or Mars, it doesn't matter, it would be one great fight that I guarantee you!
BoxingScene.com: Well, that's a big statement. Any closing thoughts?
I have a very tough fight scheduled on July 28th against a hungry undefeated fighter and I'm not over looking him one bit. The fact that I’m secluded up here in Lake Tahoe, focused 100% on boxing, Aydin, my diet, is proof that I’m taking this fight very serious. I'm going to put on a great performance at the Shark Tank and that WBC belt is staying in the USA! I want to thank the fans and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
