BoxingScene.com recently caught up with former multi-division champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero. The Gilroy, Calif. native returns to the ring on Saturday against Danny Garcia for the vacant WBC welterweight title at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The fight will be the Premier Boxing Champions debut on network giant Fox.
The recent announcement that the fight will be for the WBC title has given Guerrero (33-3-1, 18KOs) even more motivation that he already had coming into the fight. Guerrero previously held the WBC interim welterweight title.
Garcia (31-0, 18KOs) was the WBC champion in the super lightweight division and Guerrero feels that a victory will be like taking the title from the champ.
"He was the WBC champion at 140 pounds and he is coming up to 147 so I guess it is like taking his title. I am excited. I know Danny Garcia is going to be 100% prepared because when guys fight me they come extra ready because they know what I bring to the ring," said Guerrero.
Garcia knocked out Paulie Malignaggi in his last fight, his first at the full welterweight limit of 147 pounds, in a very one-sided fight. Guerrero is known for his granite chin but said that he definitely respects the undefeated Garcia's power.
"We will see how his power feels when we get in there. Of course we aren't scared of it, I've faced a lot of big punchers, but we do respect it because he does carry a punch," Guerrero explained.
