George Groves set up an all-British showdown with Chris Eubank Jr. in the World Boxing Super Series.
The super-middleweight, who retained his WBA Super title at the SSE Arena in Wembley, London, will meet the IBO champion in the UK after dispatching of Jamie Cox in the quarter-final of the tournament.
Groves faces Eubank Jr. –– who installed himself as the clear favourite for the tournament in the 168-pound division last weekend with a scintillating inside-the-distance victory over Avni Yildirim in Stuttgart –– in the semi-final after getting rid of Cox with a devastating body shot.
The fight warmed up beautifully, with both fighters exchanging shots and having moments of success.
Cox was eager, sometimes over-eager, and was almost a victim of his own success as Groves managed to nullify the threat before it being the fourth round and a big right hand to the body flooring Cox to the point of no return.
And now Groves will take on Eubank Jr. in the New Year, likely on pay-per-view, with the finer details being worked out at the moment.
“We have shared a ring enough times,” Groves –– who moved to 27-3 with 20 early in victory –– said in the aftermath. “He knows what I’m about and I know what he’s about. He’s just not big enough. I said that of Cox and I’m saying the same of Eubank Jr.
“[The fight tonight], it wasn’t too difficult and I’m still fresh. He’s got a bit of momentum but not quite the form and I’m going to show that on the night when we fight.”
Eubank Jr., who was ringside for the fight, said: “It was a good fight. He did what he had to do to win. He has no cuts and bruises, so it looks like we’re on for January and now we’ve got a super-fight that all the fans wanted.
“In my mind I’m the number one seed [in the World Boxing Super Series tournament] and I’m going to show everyone where my confidence comes from on the night.”
And finally, Kalle Sauerland, the chief boxing officer of the WBSS, talked about the mouthwatering prospect.
“It’s going to be an explosive fight,” he said. “The build-up will be huge.
“I’m not going to say too much now as to whether it will be indoors or outdoors but it will be somewhere big in January or February.”
Further details regarding the highly-anticipated grudge match between George Groves and Chris Eubank Jr. will be revealed in due course.
