Shawn Estrada, a 2008 U.S. Olympian from East Los Angeles, began his pro career in late 2008 as a super middleweight. In his 14th fight - a unanimous decision over Terrance Woods in February - Estrada tipped the scales at 192 pounds after having fought his first 11 pro bouts at less than the 168-pound super middleweight limit.
Estrada will headline a Goossen Tutor Promotions card on Aug. 11 at Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City (near Los Angeles).
Promoter Dan Goossen believes that, Estrada's weight gain notwithstanding, he will realize his potential.
"I think Shawn has just has been in a little period of his career where he had to adapt to becoming a professional, dealing with injuries, dealing with the day in and day out sacrifices and dedication you need to have at this level," Goossen said. "we are very hopeful he has overcome all of those issues.
"I believe he's got real talent. He's very, very much a man on a knockout mission. He wants to rip your head off. If he has overcome all those past obstacles, he's going to be an exciting, world-class fighter."
Goossen said the 27-year-old Estrada (14-0, 12 KOs) is slowly bringing his weight down. His fight with Felix Piedra (8-0-1, 5 KOs) will be at 185 pounds. Goossen expects Estrada to eventually settle at the 175-pound light heavyweight limit.
