Carlos Blandon, manager of WBC flyweight champion Roman "Chocolatito" González (41-0, 35KOs), is disputing some of the comments recently made by promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, who promotes WBA/WBO flyweight champion Juan Francisco "Gallo" Estrada (31-2, 22 KOs)
Beltran claimed there had been some discussions for a rematch between Estrada and Gonzalez, but Blandon is not convinced that Estrada's team is really pursuing that fight.
"Beltran continues to say that after the fight against Brian Viloria [in March], he would like [Estrada] to go against Roman. He had the opportunity to make the fight with Chocolatito - and refused, because [Estrada] was tied in with Viloria. I sincerely believe that he does not have too much trust in the ability of 'Gallo' Estrada to defeat Román and is trying to give [the runaround]," said Blandon.
"On the one hand it is good [to wait] because it increases the anticipation and that can increase the purse, but on the other hand it can be viewed as just another way of [stepping away from the fight]. Beltran has not recently contacted me, that is not true. We talked at the WBC convention. We touched on the subject of having interest in doing the fight against Gallo and then suddenly he was tied in with Viloria. We were prepared for the fight against Estrada, but I think a part of Gallo team [is reluctant to do that]."
Estrada's rematch is likely to take place in March, and Gonzalez is reportedly on board to return in late February.
