Former champion Jhonny Gonzalez is very focused on the task at hand, as he trains at the Romanza gym with coach Nacho Beristain. Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KOs) will challenge Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14 KOs) for the WBC featherweight championship on August 24th in Carson, California. Mares won the title in May, after knocking out Daniel Ponce De Leon. Gonzalez lost the title to Ponce De Leon in September, when a clash of heads ended things early and the judges saw Ponce as the technical decision winner.
"The fight might be a classic between Mexicans, who have had many wars....Barrera-Morales, Vazquez-Marquez - and we are working hard in order for everyone in the world to enjoy a great fight. In the ring you forget friendships, every one who will do their job and [Mares] is also ready for a war. A lot has been learned from my defeats. You learn more from your defeats because you don't make the same mistakes. This fight is my big chance and we will win," Gonzalez said.
"I've never worried about the judges. I will do my job, because the judges will see a winner in the ring - but I'm aware that I have to go in there and win round by round. I'm the challenger, I am aware that I will be in the home of his promoter, and therefore I need to get a clear win."
