Edgar Berlanga will stop Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz inside three rounds on Saturday, says his trainer Marc Farrait. Berlanga will face Gonzalez-Ortiz in the co-feature of a DAZN telecast from the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida. The bout will take place at super middleweight.
Berlanga is coming off the fight of his life, a pay-per-view bout against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in September. Berlanga, a 27-year-old Puerto Rican fighter originally from New York City, might have lost to Alvarez but he gained respect in the process. He went all 12 rounds with one of the best fighters of his era, something many didn’t believe he could do beforehand given his lack of experience at the highest level.
Now all that’s left to do is get back to what he does best.
“I think it won't go past three rounds,” Farrait told BoxingScene. “We just got out of a fight with Canelo. No disrespect, but his guy shouldn't even be in the ring with Edgar.”
Berlanga’s voyage to this point has been unique. It was rumored that he’d fight as the main event in Puerto Rico. Then, the card moved and Berlanga was no longer the main event, rather Austin “Ammo” Williams-Patrice Volny, an interesting middleweight bout but it lacks the name recognition of Berlanga, 22-1 (17 KOs).
“It just happens the way the dominoes fell,” Farrait said. “This is just a fucking fight that we have to take. We couldn't just go right back into a big fight with Munguia, because he is tied up.”
Gonzalez-Ortiz - a 35-year-old from San Juan, Puerto Rico - fought twice in 2024 but before that hadn’t fought since 2014. According to reports, he was dropped in his last fight in the first round against Edward Ulloa Diaz in June before going on to win. Berlanga is rightly a huge favorite but he must not get careless.
“I'm trying to keep Edgar focused. I’m telling him this guy is a top fighter and let's go in there and let's look to do damage early. Then, let's go home and just get ready for the other fights - some big fights,’” Farrait said. “I don't want to underestimate anybody. Everybody has a round in them and if you're overly confident, like I told Edgar, then you will make a mistake. Anyone can make a mistake.”
