As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, Matchroom's International heavyweight tournament, which is scheduled for May 7 in London, is now joined by no other than German-based Cuban Juan Carlos Gomez, 50-2. He completes a lineup that already includes Mike Perez, Fres Oquendo, Kevin Johnson and Tye Fields.
Gomez, a southpaw, turned pro with Universum back in 95 and was as a cruiserweight WBC champ and in a class of his own despite a well known wild lifestyle. In 2002 Gomez moved up to heavyweight and has since been hot and cold with erratic performances in and out of the ring.
With Ahmet Oener and Arena Box Promotion, Juan Carlos reached all the way to a fight against WBC king Vitali Klitschko. But while Gomez could box the ears off the big Ukrainain - he wasn´t strong enough to hold him off and was stopped.
In June of last year Gomez returned to Universum and looked good last time out stopping Harold Sconiers in four.
It could actually shape up with Gomez vs. Perez in an all-Cuban matchup in the finals.
