Current WBA Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin will make his 2014 debut February 1st in Monte Carlo, Monaco as he takes on Osumanu Adama. Golovkin had a terrific 2013 where he recorded 4 victories against the likes of Gabriel Rosado, Matthew Macklin, and Curtis Stevens.
While Golovkin awaits his opportunity to face one of the big names of the division, some already feel he’s the best fighter at 160 pounds. When BoxingScene caught up with Golovkin’s trainer Able Sanchez he was asked if he felt Golovkin was the best fighter in the division or if Gennady needed to fight the other champions first to prove it. Not only did Sanchez feel his fighter was the best, he also said the guy most consider the number one fighter in Sergio Martinez wouldn’t last more than 7 rounds against GGG.
“Team Golovkin feels he’s the best middleweight. I feel he’s the best middleweight but until we fight those marquee names and those marquee names want to fight us, you have to give that title to Sergio [Martinez] right now. Until Sergio vacates or retires, I think Sergio has proven enough in the division to claim the supposed lineal title. But in our opinion, Sergio wouldn’t go 7 rounds with Gennady Golovkin but if we never get the fight, we’re never going to be able to prove that” Sanchez told BoxingScene.
The legend of Golovkin has grown due to stories of him dropping bigger guys in sparring and his devastating power displayed in the ring as he’s stopped his last 15 opponents. While Sanchez feels Martinez wouldn’t last 12 rounds with Golovkin, he feels that applies to everyone in the Middleweight division. In fact, he doesn’t see anyone besides pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather going the distance with Gennady.
“I said about a year ago that there’s nobody at 154 pounds that can go 12 rounds with Gennady Golovkin; maybe Floyd [Mayweather] would go 12 rounds. There’s nobody at 160 that goes 12 rounds against Gennady. At 168, maybe there’s [Carl] Froch and [Andre] Ward and [Julio Cesar] Chavez because he’s so damn tough and can take a whipping but he’s tough. But there’s nobody that’s going to go 12 rounds so that’s why I say Martinez wouldn’t go 7 because of what I see in the gym” said Sanchez.
While most won’t recognize Golovkin’s upcoming opponent and would rather see him take on the other champions in the division, he’s keeping focused and remaining busy until the opportunity finally arrives. Sanchez says they are ready for the challenges and it’s up to the other champions to finally step up and fight.
