Gennady Golovkin is one of the HBO franchise fighters and come May 16th against Willie Monroe, big numbers are expected. The landscape of boxing has shifted somewhat this year because of the Al Haymon investment in putting boxing across multiple platforms on network television.

Golovkin regularly is a ratings draw on the HBO platforms and has taking the boxing world by storm one knockout at a time. But one would wonder how his numbers would transcend on a platform that has a much bigger reach outside of the HBO subscribers. Managing Director of K2, Tom Loeffler spoke on the the shift of boxing from a subscription based network to terrestrial television.

“I think it’s good to have boxing on network television, ”Loeffler told BoxingScene.com “Of course it’s good to have more places to have boxing programming on, especially on networks with so much reach.”

When asked about possibly having Golovkin on such a bigger platform outside of HBO, Loeffler made it clear that he has an exclusive contract with HBO and the immediate goal is to have Golovkin become a pay-per-view star.

“Golovkin has an exclusive contract with HBO and the plan is to get the big names like Cotto, Froch, and Canelo in there with him,” Loeffler said. “In the immediate future we want Golovkin to headline a pay-per-view and the names I’ve mentioned would get him on pay-per-view. It’s just a matter of getting guys to get in the ring with him.”

Daniel Jacobs is the “regular” champion to Golovkin’s WBA middleweight title and sooner than later will end up being Golovkin’s mandatory. Jacobs is a Premier Boxing Champions fighter under Al Haymon and Golovkin is with HBO exclusively. The question was posed to Loeffler if a situation similar to Sergey Kovalev and Adonis Stevenson WBC purse bid could end up happening with a fight with Jacobs or any PBC fighter for that matter which Loeffler responded by saying:

“I think a situation like that would be different Kovalev-Stevenson. I’ve worked with Haymon together with Jhonathan Banks. So I think we’ll take it on a fight by fight basis but we are exclusive to HBO but Golovkin has every intent on unifying his division and defending his belts as well.”
