WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs) has a lot of options for his next fight, which is being targeted for September.
Golovkin was in action this past Saturday night in Los Angeles, where he stopped Willie Monroe in six rounds.
The selection of Monroe was done because Golovkin wanted to face a slick southpaw, but another slick southpaw in Cuba's Erislandy Lara (20-2-2, 12KOs) is calling for an immediate fight.
Lara tops a Premier Boxing Champions card on June 12th, when he defends his WBA 'regular' 154-pound title against Delvin Rodriguez in Chicago.
According to Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, the fight is very doable - if the right economics can be reached.
The fight does have it's issues. Golovkin has a contract with HBO and Lara is an Al Haymon managed fighter, and Haymon fighters are being televised primarily on PBC broadcasts across a variety of networks like NBC, CBS, Showtime, ESPN, Spike TV and ABC.
"That [fight] would be fine. Lara has a fight coming up. But if he moves up to 160-pounds, it's something that we would consider. I don't know what type of economics he's going to want to get in the ring with Gennady. But it's certainly an option if all of the details can be worked out. You see, Golovkin picked a slick southpaw which Lara is also. Lara is a great fighter as well. He had a tough fight with Canelo and you can't take anything away from him. If the economics can be worked out, that's something we would consider," Loeffler said.
