SANTA MONICA, California -- Gennady Golovkin makes his second appearance of the year on HBO when he faces Marco Antonio Rubio on Oct. 18.
The matchup isn't anything to get excited about, but GGG has become much-watch TV. The hope is once Golovkin gets past this fight, some of the bigger names at middleweight might be willing to face him in 2015.
"I think there's a lot of great matchups at 160 pounds," K2 managing director Tom Loeffler told BoxingScene.com on Wednesday. "Danny Jacobs looked good, and with the backing of HBO now, (Golovkin) will get the big fights. We think that we'll have a big year in 2015. With the Rubio fight, we sold out the arena already, and that's just a step in the right direction."
It's interesting that Loeffler mentioned Jacobs. Although Golden Boy is once again doing business with HBO, it's expected Al Haymon fighters such as Jacobs will still be fighting exclusively on Showtime (or eventually NBC Sports).
A bout with a young American fighter like Jacobs would be welcome, but it seems unlikely at this point. Another potential opponent singled out by Loeffler is Hassan N'Dam, who Golovkin and Loeffler were on hand to see beat Curtis Stevens.
N'Dam is now the mandatory to the winner of Sam Soliman-Jermain Taylor, and would likey be favored in either matchup. That would mean a unification fight for GGG, and would be easy to make.
