Promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who handle IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight world champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), is reviewing the potential options for his boxer in the fall.
Golovkin returns in two weeks in a mandatory title defense against Dominic Wade at the Forum in Los Angeles, California.
If Golovkin wins, he is then the mandatory challenger to the May 7th showdown between WBC champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and British star Amir Khan.
There is very little faith in a Golovkin vs. Canelo bout happening for the fall.
Outside of Canelo, there are plenty of options for Golovkin and several of them can be found in the UK.
WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders wants a crack at Golovkin. As does IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook. And even IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale.
If there is no Canelo, the first name at the top of the list is Saunders.
"Billy Joe Saunders has said he’s willing to fight Gennady, so that would be the first choice if the Canelo fight doesn’t happen. We’re going to pursue everything to make the Canelo fight happen to get the WBC title and then, once that situation is solved, go after Saunders to see if there is a way to make that fight happen," Loeffler told The Sports Daily.
Loeffler confirmed that he was contacted regarding a catch-weight bout with Brook. Because there is a catch-weight involved, and Golovkin has no desire to drop down in weight, Loeffler feels that a fight with DeGale would potentially be easier to make. Both Brook and DeGale are promoted by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.
"Eddie contacted me about that fight and clearly Kell is a great fighter. We have a lot of respect for him. If there is a way to figure out the weight difference, then I think that’s would be something to look at, but there haven’t been any serious discussions about a Kell Brook fight. I could see a James DeGale fight being done easier than a Kell Brook fight, but you never know, I wouldn’t rule any of those out," Loeffler said.
