As reported earlier today on BoxingScene.com, the World Boxing Association rejected Daniel Jacobs' application to modify the terms of the upcoming purse bid with Gennady Golovkin.
The sanctioning body ordered the two fighters to collide in the ring. Jacobs is the WBA's 'regular' champion at middleweight, while Golovkin is the WBA's 'super' champion at the weight.
Per the rules of the WBA, Golovkin is entitled to a 75-25 split if the fight heads to a purse bid. Jacobs attempted to modify the terms to be a little more favorable, with a 60-40 split for Golovkin. The WBA's Championships Committee voted against it.
The fight is being discussed for an HBO televised date of December 10th, in New York City, with Barclays Center and Madison Square Garden as potential venues.
Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who represent Golovkin, wants to reach an agreement before the date of the purse bid, which has yet to be announced. The WBA gave both sides an October 12th deadline to reach a deal. The deadline came and went.
Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) was in action last month when he stopped IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook in five rounds. One night prior, Jacobs retained his own belt with a demolition of former champion Sergio Mora.
“Now that the ruling has come down I will continue to try to make the fight,” Loeffler told ESPN Deportes. "It’s a great fight and one I think both fighters want and a fight the fans are interested in. Everyone was waiting on the decision from the WBA and it should give us guidance on how to negotiate the fight from here. Gennady is looking forward to the fight.
"It’s the No.1 middleweight in the world against No. 2 and a huge opportunity for Danny. If he beats Gennady, all of a sudden he is at the top of the sport of boxing. Our preference, naturally, would be to reach an agreement. It’s more effective to run a promotion that way where both sides are happy.”
