Eddie Hearn, the head of Matchroom Sport, believes there is a very realistic chance that IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KO) will defend his belts against Chris Eubank Jr. (22-1, 17 KOs) on a date in September, and a UK venue to be determined.
Hearn, who promotes Eubank Jr., revealed that he is currently involved in deep negotiations with K2 Promotions' Tom Loeffler, who promotes Golovkin. According to Hearn, the two sides have agreed on most of the fine points in the deal.
Eubank Jr. will have to do his part next Saturday night, by beating unbeaten Tom Doran (17-0, 7 KOs) on the Anthony Joshua-Dominic Breazeale undercard at the O2 Arena in London.
Hearn says the word he's receiving from both camps is that everyone is on board to make this contest happen. Golovkin's handlers are still in talks with Golden Boy Promotions for a fight with Saul "Canelo' Alvarez, who returns on September 17th likely at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. But a fight with Canelo is more in line for 2017 than happening this year.
"We are in deep negotiations with Tom Loeffler., We've given them a wonderful deal. We're pretty much agreed. We have to beat Tom Doran next Saturday. I think that as long as everybody really wants that fight, and the word from both camps is that they do, then Eubank-Golovkin has a great chance of being made," Hearn told IFL TV.
Hearn is concerned a little bit, because he considers Doran to be a dangerous opponent and feels Eubank is barely thinking about anything other than a fall showdown with Golovkin. He wants Eubank to stay focused on the task at hand and then redirect that energy on Golovkin.
"All the Eubanks are thinking about is Golovkin and I hope they are not forgetting about the fight next Saturday," Hearn said.
