Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Eric Gomez, who promotes WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs), is not impressed with the recent string of wins by Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin, who holds the WBA/IBO/IBF world titles, and ordered by the World Boxing Council as the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC championship.
Canelo will defend his title on May 7th against Amir Khan at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Golovkin knocked out his 22nd consecutive opponent last Saturday night when he knocked out Dominic Wade in two rounds at The Forum in Los Angeles.
If Canelo wins his upcoming fight, the World Boxing Council has already issued an order which directs him to face Golovkin in the fall or lose his title.
Canelo and Golovkin are at odds over the weight. Canelo is not willing to face Golovkin at the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds. He wants a catch-weight of 155.
Gomez is annoyed with the suggestion that Canelo - if he goes in another direction - will be perceived as ducking Golovkin. Canelo, at age 25, has fought several tough opponents and veterans like Shane Mosley, Erislandy Lara, Austin Trout, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Alfredo Angulo and James Kirkland.
“It’s a ridiculous notion … stupid. He’s never ducked an opponent, never ducked anybody,” said Gomez to the LA Times. “Name two champions Triple-G has fought in his last 10 fights? Who? If Canelo fought all those guys, he’d still be undefeated.”
There is some truth in Gomez's comments. Opponents like Wade, Willie Monroe, Daniel Geale and Marco Antonio Rubio were either overmatched or near the end of their careers. Having said that, Golovkin stopped David Lemieux in a title unification last October in New York City. Lemieux is promoted by Golden Boy.
