There was a time when Golden Boy Promotions did a regular rotation of cards in Texas. The past few years they haven't done much in 'the Lone Star State' outside of big promotions featuring Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, who in the past two years has headlined at the Minute Maid Park at Houston and most recently at AT&T Center in Arlington, Texas against Liam Smith.
But Golden Boy could be returning there much more often with their prospects that hail from Texas, and those fighters include Hector Tanajara Jr, Joshua Franco and Vergil Ortiz.
"You have to 'mess with Texas'," said Golden Boy president, Eric Gomez, referencing the phrase that refers to the state.
"It's a great market for boxing and we're already working on that and we have plans to be there. Not just the big shows, the smaller shows, as well. And yes, of course we have to do that and it's all part of the process.
"It's a very important market for boxing. It can't be ignored."
IN OTHER NEWS: England Boxing, the national governing body (NGB) for boxing in England, has announced the appointment of barrister, Lawrence Selby, as a new Non-Executive Board Director.
He was appointed following an open and transparent recruitment process and is the fourth Non-Executive Director on England Boxing’s 12-person Board.
An experienced barrister, specialising in criminal law, Selby will chair England Boxing’s Legal, Compliance and HR Sub-Committee and replaces Margaret Byrne who stepped down from the Board earlier this year to pursue a career break.
Selby, 46, has nearly 20 years practice as a Barrister and works at the Chambers of Stephen Kay QC in London where he specialises in defending cases of homicide, fraud and significant drug offences.
He also works on regulatory cases and has advised on a range of sports based issues including the role of NGBs in drafting rules, regulations and policies; the role of football agents in relation to the Football Association’s (FA) arbitration process and the interaction between football clubs and the FA’s Rules and Regulations.
