No matter what happens in the next week or so with the ongoing negotiations for Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor, Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez has made it clear that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin will NOT budge from the scheduled date of September 16th.

Mayweather has often fought in May, during Cinco De Mayo weekend, and in September during Mexican Independence Day weekend.

UFC President Dana White admitted that September 16 was the target date for the Mayweather-McGregor fight - but also said "they lost" the date when Canelo-Golovkin was officially announced.

However, Mayweather believes the fight with McGregor is big enough that it could take place on "any date" regardless of potential competition.

In the past, Mayweather has pushed other events from their dates. This time it won't, says Gomez.

"There's no way this fight will change the date, it's the fight everyone wants to see, and where everyone wants to be," Gomez told ESPN Deportes in response to Mayweather potentially making a play to Canelo-Golovkin off the September date.

"This is a fight that people have been waiting for, for a long time, the two fighters everyone wanted to fight, both are going to arrive at their best, it is a fight that can change the direction of the history of boxing."

At the moment there is not venue set for Canelo-Golovkin - but Mayweather-McGregor is a likely bet to take place in Las Vegas, and McGregor has already submitted an application to get a boxing license in Nevada. Canelo-Golovkin could take place in Las Vegas, Texas, New York City or Los Angeles.
