The brand new world champion of the WBA a junior flyweight, Mexicos Giovanni Segura, is very happy because he finally got the fight he wanted - a unification bout with WBO champion Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico. Segura sat down to talk about that fight, set for August 28, with BoxingScene.com/NotiFight.com.
"I'm very happy because with this fight with Calderon has fulfilled one of my dreams as a professional boxer. This was a major goal of mine, to face the best in my division and I am very happy about that," Segura said.
How did you feel when you were told he was ready the fight and you only had to sign the contract?
“I jumped. I was told that the contract would come soon and I waited for four hours after training. I did not want to leave the house before putting down my signature and I waited until it came."
With only a little more than a month of notice, does that not affect you to have adequate preparation?
“I can not deny it will but it's the fight I wanted, and I will not complain, and I also was preparing to face Vargas in Mexico, but I jumped during the training camp to fight Calderón. As you can imagine, I have a commitment to my fans, I am also a world champion, and entire country is behind me. What else I can ask for? I just have to get ready with the time remaining.
Is this the fight you wanted?
“Sure, I always asked for it, and believe me I'm surprised, because to be honest, I was losing hope that Calderon and his people would notice me to unify the titles .
Does it bother you that Calderon says you have power and nothing more?
“Not at all, I am aware of what I have and it's a fact that there will be 36 minutes to connect, there are 12 rounds for what I want to happen. And what will happen is that when I connect, Calderon will know that fact."
Are you excited to fight in Puerto Rico?
“A lot, because in addition to facing Calderon. I wanted to see this beautiful island and its people, who very knowledgeable boxing people, and something else, I have the illusion of meeting Tito Trinidad to take a picture with him because he is one of my idols in boxing, along with Julio Cesar Chavez. I know Tito will support his countryman, but it doesn't matter because the pleasure of greeting him and chatting for a bit with him means a lot to me."
Calderon also said that Hugo Cazares is smarter than you, how do you take that?
“He has the right to judge and say whatever he wants. I have the formula to beat Calderon. I know few people believe in me and I'm going against a great champion, going against experience in his homeland, before his people, with everything against me. But the dream of winning won't be taken from me. I only had 12 amateur fights, I started to train to be a professional at 21 years old, but now I like it, I am world champion, and I'm going for another title. "
What do you predict in the fight with Calderon?
“As we can all imagine, I will be searched around four corners because he will be on his bicycle, but the big question is - what happens when I connect with a good shot. Look, I grew up in a rough neighborhood in Mexico, where it was necessary to defend yourself, having fights almost daily. I'm not afraid of anything. Boxing for me is fun. I enjoy it."
