WBA junior flyweight champion Giovanni Segura (25-1-1, 21KOs) of Mexico added the WBO title to his waist by knocking out previously undefeated Ivan Calderon (34-1-1, 6KOs) of Puerto Rico in the eight round at the Coliseo Mario 'Quijote' Morales in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Calderon did well with his boxing but appeared to fade in the later rounds. He started to take a lot of punishment and was cut as the fight came to the eight round. Segura started to overwhelm him with punches and a hard hook to the body sent Calderon down for the full count. The fight was very exciting from start to finish.
Puerto Rican lightweight prospect Jose Gonzalez stopped his compatriot Hector Marengo in the sixth round of a war. The fight was a classic left-handed puncher versus an orthodox hitter with Marengo and Gonzalez never giving an inch in the ring. The began to exchange from the first bell, keeping the crowd on their feet screaming and hysterical.
The tide began to chance by the fifth when Gonzalez left Marengo bloody and fading. Near the beginning of the sixth, the ring doctor looked at Marengo and allowed to continue, but Gonzalez pounced on his wounded prey, delivering jolts of power, with little response, forcing the referee Roberto Ramirez Jr. to stop the hostilities.
González raised his record to 12-0 with 8 knockouts. Marengo lost his unbeaten record and fell to 5-1 with 3 KOs.
McJoe Arroyo (5-0, 2KOs) won a six round decision over Sigredo Medina (3-2) in a bantamweight clash. The scores were 60-54 on all three cards.
Welterweight contender Alex "El Pollo" DeJesus defeated Jose Angel Roman with a six round decision. El Pollo started very slow, cautious and throwing out an occasional jab for the first two rounds against an aggressive Roman. For the third and fourth, De Jesus began to let his hands go a little more but Roman stood behind a tight defense. The fifth and sixth saw both fighters at their busiest, with more punches connecting from El Pollo, including combinations.
In the end, the judges rewarded the points victory to De Jesus with scores of 60-54 on all three scorecards. De Jesús' record goes to 20-1, 14 KOs and Roman falls to 11-26-5, 5 KOs.
