On Sunday, BoxingScene.com broke the story that Ring Magazine junior flyweight champion Giovani Segura will return to the ring on May 28th in Mexico. Segura last appeared in the ring on April 2nd when he knocked out Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico in the third round of their rematch. Segura struggled to make the 108 pound weight limit and will now campaign at 112 pounds.
Segura wants to face the best opposition out there and wants to let the fans know that he plans on facing one of the top fighters in the flyweight division soon. His fight on May 28th is a stay busy fight but he prefers to be in the ring often rather than wait around for a big fight. The Mexican fighter feels that staying active is the key to staying sharp.
Segura told BoxingScene, "Of course I want the big fights but I also need to stay busy. I am not the type of guy who will just sit on the sidelines and wait for fights. There are other champions out there who sit around waiting for an HBO date and are just looking at the money. Staying active is the key to this game. That is how you stay on top."
Segura hopes that a big fight will come by the end of the summer. Segura revealed that he would love to face WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. "I would a crack at dethroning the WBC champion from Thailand (Wonjongkam). He is a good fighter. I just want to add another belt to my collection," said Segura.
Segura finished up our conversation by offering praise to his countryman Orlando Salido who defeated Juan Manuel Lopez via knockout this past Saturday. Salido, who is from Ciudad Obregon, Mexico was able to go into the Puerto Rican's backyard and score a huge upset win to capture the WBO featherweight title. Segura did the same thing last summer when he defeated Ivan Calderon via knockout. Calderon and Lopez were both undefeated at the time and were big betting favorites.
Segura told BoxingScene, "I am extremely proud of Orlando for following in my footsteps by going into Puerto Rico and knocking out their reigning champion. He fought a great fight and was able to beat a tough fighter who was undefeated."
