While the glamour divisions of boxing tend to be at the higher weights, there’s plenty going on with the smaller fighters of the sport who don’t always get the recognition they deserve. Flyweight Giovani Segura is the epitome of a Mexican warrior as his come forward style and high volume punching makes him one of the most exciting fighters in the lower weight classes.
Segura is currently training for a fight on April 5th which Boxingscene learned will serve as a stay busy fight for a Flyweight showdown in the summer against current WBA and WBO Flyweight champion Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada.
“Everything is going good. We have a fight on April 5th in Tijuana, Mexico and after that one we’re going to fight “El Gallo” Estrada; probably around June or July, around there. So this is going to be a 10 round fight and I’m just getting ready for April 5th” Segura would reveal to BoxingScene after a vigorous workout.
Segura is coming off an excellent victory over Hernan “Tyson” Marquez last November where both men went to war and put on a fight of the year candidate. Once again proving that smaller guys can entertain just as well as anyone, both men engaged in a furious war that provided excitement and a dramatic knockout in the 12th and final round as Segura recorded his 31st victory.
As for Estrada, he burst on the scene in 2012 when he gave then Light Flyweight champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez all he could handle over 12 rounds. Even though he came up short, he gave a great account of himself. That led to a fight with champion Brian Viloria who Estrada dethroned by winning a split decision victory.
Estrada has quickly made a name for himself and Segura is anxious to get in the ring and test himself once again against the best.
“It’s very exciting because [Estrada has] proven his point and he’s proven that he’s a true champion. That’s a big challenge for me and I love that. I’m not going against an easy opponent. Viloria beat me and he beat Viloria so that means a bigger challenge for me. I’m very excited, I want of fight him. I just want to get in there and throw punches at him and see what’s going to happen. He may box me, he may not so that’s what makes this fight exciting” Segura would tell BoxingScene.
A definitive date has not been set but both men will face off sometime in the summer. Given Segura’s style and ability to lure fighters in a war, it’s hard to imagine this fight not being a barn burner and a treat for boxing fans.
