Gilberto Ramirez (40-0) made his light heavyweight debut this past Saturday night and stopped Tommy Karpency in 4 rounds. The fight was the chief supporting bout underneath the Vasiliy Lomachenko-Anthony Crolla main event. Both fights were streamed live on ESPN+.
The WBO super middleweight champion has stated after his past few fights that getting down to the 168 pound limit was becoming increasing difficult. After his promoter mentioned a potentional unification fight against WBA champion Callum Smith, Ramirez left the door open to going back down in weight one more time.
"It is hard but I can make it. If they give me an interesting fight I can do it. It is very hard for me but once I talk to my promoter and team I will decided. I believe that at 175 I can make more history," Ramirez said in reference to becoming the first Mexican super middleweight champion.
Ramirez knows that the competition at light heavyweight is fierce but welcomes the challenge. He would like to fight all of the champions to prove how good he is.
"They punch hard. (Artur) Beterbiev has a really good punch and (Alexandr) Gvozdyk I believe is the best of the four champions along with (Sergey) Kovalev and (Dmitry) Bivol," Ramirez told BoxingScene.com. "I just want to fight the best to prove I am the best. I always want to fight the best fighter."
Another fighter looking to move up to 175 is long time Ramirez adversary Jesse Hart. Ramirez is 2-0 against Hart but won both fights by razor thin margins.
As BoxingScene.com previously reported, Hart will challenge former champion Eleider Alvarez of Colombia. The fight will serve as the co-feature bout underneath the Tyson Fury-Tom Schwarz undercard on June 15th in Las Vegas.
Ramirez believes that his former rival will be too much for the Colombian.
"That is a good fight for him. He should do good in that fight. I think that Hart is going to win and probably will win by knockout," said Ramirez.
