It won't be easy for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) on Cinco De Mayo weekend won't be easy, says veteran trainer Abel Sanchez.
Canelo will jump from junior middleweight to a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds to face countryman Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who is coming down from the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds.
The HBO Pay-Per-View fight takes place on May 6th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
If Canelo wins, there is a possibility that he will face IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight world champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) during Mexican Independence Day weekend in September.
Golovkin, who is Sanchez's main fighter, is possibly going to return to the ring on June 10 in Kazakhstan against WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders - if both camps are actually able to reach an agreement on the terms.
Chavez Jr., for the first time in a long time, is taking his training camp very seriously. He hired Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain and conditioning coach Angel "Memo" Heredia. Based on some of his recent training camp photos, he's in fantastic shape and appears to be down in weight faster than anticipated.
Sanchez anticipates a tough contest for Canelo. He believes Chavez Jr. will have his moments in the fight and may even score a knockdown during the contest. Overall, Sanchez is backing Canelo to come away with the victory. He thinks Canelo's speed will be the key to victory - trumping the size and physical strength advantage of the much taller Chavez.
"That’s a tough fight, that’s not an easy fight for Canelo. I think Julio scares him a couple of times, he may drop Canelo or may hurt him. I still think Canelo wins, I think his youth and his hand speed and movement may give Julio troubles," Sanchez told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
