Brooklyn, New York - Baltimore Maryland's own Gervonta Davis (16-0, 15 KO's) will get his chance to prove he is one of boxing's better fighters when he takes on Puerto Rico's IBF world champion Jose Pedraza(22-0, 12 KO's) in a super featherweight title showdown.
The Showtime televised fight take place on January 14th at the Barclays Center as the co-feature attraction to the super middleweight unification between Badou Jack and James DeGale.
Davis is regarded as one of boxing's better prospects and a victory over Pedraza could catapult him into the public eye of the sport. Promoted by Floyd Mayweather, the young prospect has a blue print to follow to achieve stardom. But first, he must overcome a fight against his toughest opponent to date.
"He's a tough opponent," Davis told BoxingScene.com. "We're going to be ready January 14th. I will be ready and he will be ready and hopefully he will make it a good fight."
Davis acknowledges the task in front of him with Pedraza.
"On paper this is my hardest test," stated Davis. "He's a great fighter and I'm a great fighter. I will be putting in my work. I'm definitely coming to steal the show, I'm already stealing the show. You're going to get Jose Pedraza out of here and then we take over the division"
Davis shut down the rumors that his planned fight with WBA champion Jason Sosa was cancelled because of his desire for more money.
"I'm not for sure why the fight didn't happen with Sosa," explained Davis. "I was ready to go into camp. One day i got on twitter and they said I priced myself out. We never discussed price or anything."
Either fighter for Davis, the prospect acknowledges he's seen and conquered both styles.
"I actually watched Pedraza and Sosa, and we like to compete and I don't want no lousy fighter. He's sharp but I sparred those guys in the gym and I stopped those cats. I won't say no names but I've handled guys like them already."
In a recent article on Fighthype.com, some information was published that prevented a negative promotional relationship between Davis and Mayweather. Both were present at the press conference and seemed to have been cordial. Davis took the high road in speaking about the subject.
"It's no distraction to me. Me and Floyd we're going to handle what we have to handle behind close doors and we'll be fine," Davis said.
