FORMER World Boxing Council flyweight champion Gerry Peñalosa followed in the footsteps of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and signed a contract with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Standard Today, Peñalosa disclosed he signed the agreement at De La Hoya’s office in downtown LA in the presence of Golden Boy Promotions vice president, international matchmaker and close friend of De La Hoya - Eric Gomez, who earlier this year signed up ALA Gym’s emerging sensation Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and OPBF super flyweight champion Z “The Dream” Gorres.

Peñalosa received a signing bonus of $5,000 or just over P250,000 for the seven-fight deal.

“I am very, very happy,” said Peñalosa, who is scheduled to fight on Oct. 21 and a possible world title shot on Dec. 2.

Respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer confirmed what Gomez told Standard Today last Wednesday that Bautista will also hopefully see action on the Dec. 2 card.

Peñalosa revealed that celebrated trainer Freddie Roach will be his trainer as well as manager, along with Pacquiao, who had asked Penalosa not to sign with Golden Boy until he arrived in LA.

In addition to his customary 10 percent trainer’s fee, Roach and Pacquiao will receive an additional 15 percent of his fight purse for managing the veteran southpaw.

However, Pacquiao told Penalosa he didn’t have to pay him and could keep his share.

Roach, who first rescued flyweight contender Diosdado Gabi from the clutches of Mike Koncz, and later took over as manager, had Gabi sign up with Golden Boy several weeks before convincing Pacquiao to do the same last Monday after a secret dinner meeting with De La Hoya.
