Super middleweight contender George Groves (21-3, 16KOs) is still very motivated to face the best fighters in his division and he wants to get to them next year. Groves returns to the ring on January 30th, when he faces Andrea Di Luisa at Copper Box Arena in London.
Groves had a setback this year when he suffered a defeat in his third world title loss. He traveled to the United States and challenged WBC champion Badou Jack at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Groves was dropped in the first round and he suffered a close twelve round split decision atthe end.
Although he lost, he received a lot of exposure as the fight was showcased as part of the undercard to Floyd Mayweather's retirement pay-per-view against Andre Berto.
Since the departure of Andre Ward to the light heavyweight division, many consider James DeGale to be the best fighter at the weight. And DeGale's only career defeat came at the hands of Groves in 2011.
Groves is promoted by Sauerland Event, who also promote WBO champion Arthur Abraham.
“It’s annoying because if you went through the list of the four champions James would probably be up there as one of the best. But then he’s the one I’ve beaten, he’s only lost once and it was to me. Badou Jack is a better fighter than anyone gave him credit for but I still think I’m better than him," Groves told the Kilburn Times.
“Other than that, I think I’d beat Arthur Abraham easily and I think [WBA champion] Fedor Chudinov is technically decent and very strong looking but there to be outboxed. I think when you look at the world champions, I think I can beat them all. I’ve lost to one and I’ve also beaten one.”
