Abel Sanchez, trainer of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26KOs), has a lot of respect for his boxer's upcoming opponent, two-time former champion Daniel Geale (30-2, 16KOs) of Australia.
The HBO televised bout is taking place on July 26th at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Geale is the most accomplished boxer to step in the ring with Golovkin. The Aussie fighter has beaten former champions Felix Sturm, Anthony Mundine, Roman Karmazin, Sebastian Sylvester, and also defeated several top contenders over the years.
Unlike in some of his other fights, Golovkin will not have a height or a reach advantage against Geale.
But Geale's biggest attribute, says Sanchez, is the former champ's ability to throw a very high volume of punches throughout an entire fight.
"He is definitely the most accomplished guy that we have faced. Maybe not the biggest puncher, but certainly the most accomplished based on his wins and what he's done. A two-time world champion. He has [two losses] and one of them is a disputed loss. We're looking for an extra hard challenge, he has one of the leading coaches in Australia. He will come in there at 100% and we are not even overlooking that," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.
"He's a volume puncher. He's not the biggest puncher, but he never stops throwing punches and Gennady has never seen that. He has done that with other fighters. Whether he can do that with Gennady remains to be seen but he is a volume puncher, he's experienced, he's the same height as Gennady so we won't an advantage there. We won't have reach advantage. If Daniel Geale doesn't come in at 100% then he's in trouble. But I believe that he'll be a difficult fight for us but a great fight for the fans."
