Matchroom confirmed that Birmingham’s Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 early) has had to withdraw from his October 17 local derby showdown with British and Commonwealth welterweight champion Sam Eggington (16-2, 9 KOs) due to a foot injury. Gavin revealed that he was run over a fortnight ago when tweeting about the injury and posting a photo of his badly bruised foot.
The injury coupled with the impact on his training schedule has left the 30-year-old with no choice but to pull out of the eagerly-awaited domestic showdown, leaving Eggington, 21, in need of a new opponent for the Birmingham Barclaycard Arena showcase.
The fight would have been Gavin’s first outing since losing to Kell Brook for the IBF welterweight title in May. The former British and Commonwealth titlist called for the fight with Eggington in a bid to get himself back into contention.
Eggington’s fine recent form has seen him emerge as a genuine threat over the past year and the fight with Gavin would have been a tough test of his credentials. It should be rescheduled for 2016, according to Gavin.
